In the Gravitropism installation series, we are controlling the growth and movement of plants with gravity and hormones. Plants have ways to flexibly respond and adapt to environmental changes. In this tulip installation, the tulips bulbs are grown upside down in mid-air. The stems gradually turn 180 degrees to face upward, showing negative gravitropism (growing in the opposite direction of the gravitational pull). Gravitropism is triggered by changes in the concentration of hormones (auxin) within the plant cells. Negative gravitropism helps the plants grow upward and maximize contact with sunlight. Plants are grown in various different angles in this installation. The accuracy and beauty of the natural phenomenon can be experienced in the exhibitions.

Gravitropismは重力屈性の理論を使って、植物の成長や動きを重力とホルモン作用によって操作するインスタレーションです。植物には環境の変化に柔軟に適応するさまざまな機能があります。このチューリップのインスタレーションでは、球根を空中で逆さに栽培しています。茎は徐々に180度曲り、上方向に成長します。これを負の重力屈性と言います（重力と逆の方向に成長すること）。重力屈性は植物細胞内のオーキシンという植物ホルモンの濃度変化によって起こります。植物の地上の部分が上を向くように促し、太陽の光に接触する可能性を最大化します。この特性を使って、プロジェクトでは、さまざまな角度で植物を栽培し、植物の茎の形や角度を操作しています。展覧会では、植物の正確で美しい動きをご体験いただけます。
